DJ Mix Club was established back in 1998 as an official Technics DJ School and was the first DJ School set up in South Africa When we kicked things off we ran the DJ school out the back of a record store in Blairgowrie before taking over the entire business in 2003 We introduced a new DJ store business model and began to run things our own unique way with the emphasis on importing the latest 12 records from the UK USA Germany and Holland in addition to retailing the hottest DJ equipment out at the time The DJ Mix Club still imports the formidable range of Technics headphones Selected turntables are still available from our store however we have progressed to selling more CD players and DJ MIDI controllers than turntables now a days
Since 98 the DJ Mix Club has trained over 4000 students at our store and our DJ Courses and methods have also been integrated into courses for training in tertiary institutions Selected institutions such as Damelin and Allenby as well as prestigious High Schools like Hilton College and St Stithians have requested our services whereby we have run tailored DJ short courses for their students The DJ Mix Club has crowned multiple national DJ champions in the SA Battle of the DJ s competition which started back in 1985 the likes of Ready D DJ Dizzy Dean and Nelson Afroboogie and given rise to a host of successful DJ s including Shane Halcon First State and Paul Bingham
With the digital music transition making broad changes in the way DJ s are learning to play DJ Mix Club teamed up with Denon DJ in 2011 to put together a digital DJ course using Denon and other popular gear to train students into alternate ways to play their gigs To this day we still start all new students off on the good old Technics SL before we move them onto CDJ s or controllers to give them a feel of what all the other gear is more or less based on DJ Mix Club have also recently struck up a deal with Native Instruments to provide specialist Traktor DJ courses to educate all of its users out there as to the capabilities of its industry standard DJ software
DJ Mix Club was also one of the few schools to delve into Music Production training as we always felt that production was the next logical step after learning to DJ Currently we run a 1 Year part-time course weaving together DJing Music Production and Marketing training as well as 2 month part time specialist courses in Propellerheads Reason or Ableton Live We are one of the last surviving record and gear stores in South Africa and we can attribute that success to our passionate staff numerous involvements in the electronic music scene and our multi pillared business model encompassing training online and physical retail stores and gear rentals
